Youth and Family Conflict Intervention Program
Helping
parents and youth in conflict
How Can This Service Help Us?
Conflict between parents and youth is normal, but if home feels like a
war zone, it may be useful to seek outside help.
The Youth and Family Conflict Intervention Program can help families
reduce the intensity of conflict, identify and address the issues, and
support both youth and parents as they explore solutions.
Who Qualifies For This Service?
Any family living in Maple Ridge or Pitt Meadows, experiencing
parent/youth conflict with a youth between the ages of 12 and 19, is
eligible to receive service.
What Can You Expect?
Parents and youth can expect to learn skills for communicating more
effectively, strategies for problem-solving and managing behaviour and help
for reducing the existing conflict in the home.
Parents will gain information about the developmental issues of youth,
and how to most effectively parent through this transition.
Services Offered
Parents and/or youth will meet weekly with program staff (more frequently
if the conflict is severe) up to a maximum of eight sessions. Client
sessions are usually scheduled for afternoons or evenings, under special
circumstances home visits or weekend sessions can be arranged.
Families will identify their service goals, and strategies for attaining
these goals will be established and reviewed as necessary.
Families are expected to be full and active participants in the process.
Youth, parents and program staff will maintain a safe, supportive and
respectful atmosphere in which to explore solutions to conflict.
How Can We Access This Service?
Parents and youth may access this program by calling our Community
Services office or by contacting the local Ministry of Children and Family
Development office.
Program staff will then contact you and arrange an appointment.
What If My Youth/Parent Refuses To Attend?
Participation in the Youth and Family Conflict Intervention Program is
voluntary, unless mandated by court order.
Youth can access the program to get support and tips on managing feelings
and avoiding conflict with parents.
Adults parenting in the home can attend the program to discuss issues and
learn strategies for parenting youth.
The program takes a multi-systemic, solution focused approach to working with youth and family issues.
This means that all members of the family can become involved in seeking
concrete solutions to the conflict.
Funding & Cost
The program is funded by the Ministry of Child and Family Development and
is provided at no cost to families who qualify for this service.
