Anishnaabe Place - Aboriginal Services

The mission is to positively affect the lives of children, youth, adults, families and to create a community where people are supported, valued, and enjoy a sense of belonging.  Families will be respected, valued and supported as the central point of decision making with regards to their goals, objectives and accomplishments.


Anishnaabe Place (The First People) will offer information, support, referral services, informal education in Traditional Teachings and a strong cultural environment that encourages a sense of belonging.  The centre will have coffee on and will welcome community members and clients to come in and talk informally with one another.

What Services Are Available?

Anishnaabe Place provides programs to all Aboriginal groups, e.g. First Nations, Metis and Urban.

How Can These Programs Help?

Community Greeting Program

The Community Greeting program serves to welcome Aboriginal families who are new to the community or who have been referred to Anishnaabe Place and who may requires supports and services available in the community.

Aboriginal Parenting Program

The Aboriginal Parenting program is open to:

bulletAboriginal parents who are experiencing difficulties in managing their children's emotional, behavioural or physical needs
bulletAboriginal parents who would benefit from parenting resources, parenting support and positive parenting strategies

Parents will receive information about the parenting groups and how to register through Ministry referrals and from program brochures, distributed by the Community Greeters, staff members at the Katzie First Nations Band Office, Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows Community Services Aboriginal Programs, Community Agencies, Library, the School District and other community partners.

The program will also privide parenting resources including stages of development for children & youth, communication strategies, traditional techings and ceremonies.  Other topics of special interest to the group will also be provided wherever possible.

Written materials from the Parenting program will also be supplied to the Support Circles and Family Strengthening programs.

Support Circles for Men, Women, Families and Communities

The objective of the Support Circles is to aid members of the community with limited resources and to connect them with a wide range of services.  The program includes workshops, healing circles, talking circles, information about life skills training, health and healing resources, Aboriginal issues, human rights, cultural survival, education, employment, addiction, abuse and neglect, anger management as well as longhouse and sweat lodge ceremonies.  While supporting the community through traditional strength, these circles will help to develop mutual aid and self-help to all members of the community.

Traditional Kitchen/Sizzling Chefs

The Traditional Kitchen and Family Life program is available to Aboriginal families on a voluntary basis with priority being given to families and individuals with assessed needs such as isolation, low income, single parent, etc.  An individual or family may attend the Traditional Kitchen Gathering as their sole connection to Anishnaabe Place or as part of their Family Strengthening or Support Circle connection.

Teaching to Youth - Tool Time

The Tool Time program is open to youth between the ages of 12 - 18 years of age who are referred by the Ministry of Children and Family Development.  Youth may be experiencing difficulties with the law and/or the community and may not feel a connection to their culture.

Family Strengthening

The Family Strengthening program is open to Aboriginal families who are experiencing isolation, a lack of connection to their Aboriginal heritage, and/or poor coping and parenting skills who are either identified by the Ministry of Children and Family Development or who have identified themselves as needing family support from Anishnaabe Place.

Funding

Anishnaabe Place is funded by the Ministry for Children and Family Development and Victoria Foundation - Fraser Region Aboriginal Strategic Trust Fund.
