Anishnaabe Place - Aboriginal Services
The mission is to positively affect the lives of children, youth,
adults, families and to create a community where people are supported,
valued, and enjoy a sense of belonging. Families will be respected,
valued and supported as the central point of decision making with regards
to their goals, objectives and accomplishments.
Anishnaabe Place (The First People) will offer information, support,
referral services, informal education in Traditional Teachings and a
strong cultural environment that encourages a sense of belonging.
The centre will have coffee on and will welcome community members and
clients to come in and talk informally with one another.
What Services Are Available?
Anishnaabe Place provides programs to all Aboriginal groups, e.g.
First Nations, Metis and Urban.
Parents will receive information about the parenting groups and how
to register through Ministry referrals and from program brochures,
distributed by the Community Greeters, staff members at the Katzie First
Nations Band Office, Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows Community Services
Aboriginal Programs, Community Agencies, Library, the School District
and other community partners.
The program will also privide parenting resources including stages of
development for children & youth, communication strategies,
traditional techings and ceremonies. Other topics of special
interest to the group will also be provided wherever possible.
Written materials from the Parenting program will also be supplied to
the Support Circles and Family Strengthening programs.
Support Circles for Men, Women, Families and Communities
The objective of the Support Circles is to aid members of the
community with limited resources and to connect them with a wide range
of services. The program includes workshops, healing circles,
talking circles, information about life skills training, health and
healing resources, Aboriginal issues, human rights, cultural survival,
education, employment, addiction, abuse and neglect, anger management as
well as longhouse and sweat lodge ceremonies. While supporting the
community through traditional strength, these circles will help to
develop mutual aid and self-help to all members of the community.
Traditional Kitchen/Sizzling Chefs
The Traditional Kitchen and Family Life program is available to
Aboriginal families on a voluntary basis with priority being given to
families and individuals with assessed needs such as isolation, low
income, single parent, etc. An individual or family may attend the
Traditional Kitchen Gathering as their sole connection to Anishnaabe
Place or as part of their Family Strengthening or Support Circle
connection.
Teaching to Youth - Tool Time
The Tool Time program is open to youth between the ages of 12 - 18
years of age who are referred by the Ministry of Children and Family
Development. Youth may be experiencing difficulties with the law
and/or the community and may not feel a connection to their culture.
Family Strengthening
The Family Strengthening program is open to Aboriginal families who
are experiencing isolation, a lack of connection to their Aboriginal
heritage, and/or poor coping and parenting skills who are either
identified by the Ministry of Children and Family Development or who
have identified themselves as needing family support from Anishnaabe
Place.
